A trainer made from hemp canvas - a collaboration with our friends at Buddy 🤝⁣

A long time in the making, these trainers are the end result of a year’s worth of back and forth with our favourite t-shirt brand, who’ve been championing hemp since 2018. We both share a similar goal: to take two everyday items in one’s wardrobe, tackle their manufacturing in a sustainable way, and obsess over their aesthetic details so the wearer will reach for that t-shirt and that pair of trainers over and over again. ⁣

Hemp

Incredibly strong, easy to grow and inherently organic, hemp is by a wide margin the most truly sustainable material we work with. Hemp cultivation requires no pesticides or insecticides, and only a quarter the water required of cotton. Even better, it detoxifies and regenerates the soil it’s grown in, as well as removing CO2 from the atmosphere at an impressive rate.

As a fabric hemp has similar properties to merino, being antimicrobial (low odour retention, which means it stays fresher for longer), and both insulating and breathable. It also softens with age, and is one of the most durable natural fibres on earth.

Organic Cotton

The organic cotton used throughout our trainers is grown with the intention of minimising the impact of its creation on both farmer and environment. Organic cotton is cultivated without insecticides, pesticides, synthetic fertilisers, or GMO seeds.

Natural Latex Rubber

All our outsoles and foxing sidewalls are made from natural latex rubber from the hevea brasiliensis tree, vulcanised in a pressurised kiln at 120º to fuse the sole to the upper. Flexible yet durable, natural rubber is a naturally sustainable product that’s ultimately biodegradable at the end of its life.

Cork

Natural cork is the bark taken from the quercus suber, more commonly named the cork oak. Sustainably harvested with no damage to the tree it grows upon, natural cork is inherently anti-microbial (hypoallergenic & resistant to bacteria) and hydrophobic (repels water) making it the perfect material to stand between your feet and the ground.

Ortholite® Eco™

Our insole foam is made from an environmentally friendly formulation containing both a renewable sourced castor bean oil in place of the traditional petroleum derived foam, and incorporates a percentage of recycled rubber.

Recycled Packaging

Our shoe boxes and courier bags are made from 100% post consumer paper waste and printed from plant based inks.

Start with the EU size of your best-fitting trainers (usually on the tongue label or insole). Then measure your foot from heel to longest toe and check it against the foot length column.

Our Partners

We work directly with our production partner in Dongguan, China, visiting quarterly to work alongside them sourcing, developing, testing and fine tuning each product we release.

Run by a mixed team comprising New Zealanders, British and Chinese, the best of both Western and Eastern values are present in the workplace culture.

Most importantly, a commitment to ethical manufacturing is reflected throughout the workplace. All workers are paid a living wage, and are provided multiple benefits including health insurance, a pension, on-site accommodation, and access to English lessons.

Naturally Sourced

In an effort to reduce the long term impact of the products we create, we go to great lengths to limit our use of synthetic materials to the bare minimum.

The uppers of these trainers are made from a beautifully textured organic hemp canvas, while the sidewall foxing and outsole are natural rubber latex from the Hevea Brasiliensis, tapped and collected by hand.

For cushioning we use Ortholite Eco® insoles derived from renewable castor oil rather than petroleum based, covered with a naturally sustainable cork veneer that helps wick moisture away from the feet.

Super comfy!

We're gearing up for our summer pop-up and I have long hours ahead on my feet. Not only are these sneaks chic and kinder on the environment, their cork insole is super absorbing so will keep me comfortable day in and out.

Greta Trainers

Great trainers, look amazing! For me the fabric in the back has rubbed off quite quickly though, especially compared to the pair of Veld Hemp I also have which I got a lot of wear out of before they first started rubbing off. That’s the only downside, I wish they stayed intact a bit longer, but otherwise amazing.

The customer service team was super helpful when I had some sizing queries prior to purchase, and I have to say they fit perfectly. Saving to buy my next pair already!

Super comfortable

I love the design and ethos of these shoes. I have brought other sustainable brands of trainers (Saye), which haven’t actually been that comfortable. These however are! I really can’t fault them, they are my dream shoe. I have worn Novesta’s for years, but will now wear these. I have I introduced lots of friends to the brand, so fingers crossed them will get them too.
